On Tuesday afternoon at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank at IGA Stadium in Montréal, one seed fell and two others had to battle their way out of a third-set tiebreaker to survive.
David Goffin (15) of Belgium was ousted by Guido Pella of Argentina in two sets (6-4, 7-6 (4)).
As for Borna Coric (11) of Croatia and John Isner (12) of the US, they owe their tickets to the next round to a few points they managed to scrape together just in time.
Coric fended off two match points to overpower Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in three sets (2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2)), while Isner was broken in the first set but slowly gained momentum and defeated Jordan Thompson of Australia (3-6, 6-3, 7-5 (6)).
Marin Cilic (14) of Croatia frustrated American qualifier Bradley Klahn (6-3, 7-6 (7)).
John Millman of Australia, who made it through the qualifying event, reached the second round with a win over Feliciano Lopez of Spain (6-7, 7-6, 6-3).
Today’s other winners are Daniel Evans of the US, Radu Albot of Moldova over Gilles Simon of France, Diego Schwartzman of Argentina and Hubert Hurkacz of Poland.
In doubles, Canadian Denis Shapovalov and Rohan Bopanna of India routed the French team of Nicolas Mahut and Édouard Roger-Vasselin (4-6, 6-1, 10-6).
