The National Bank Open, formerly Rogers Cup

Thiem dissolves in 56 minutes

August 9, 2019

On Friday afternoon, in the first quarterfinal match of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, Daniil Medvedev of Russia served divinely and crushed Dominic Thiem of Austria (6-3, 6-1).

It took the eighth seed just 56 minutes to send his rival packing and secure his spot in the semis on Saturday.

Thiem chalked up relatively easy wins in their last two battles, but the 23-year-old Russian had no intention of letting history repeat itself.

In total control from start to finish, Medvedev was absolutely superb, making 96% of his first serves (59% for Thiem) and hitting six aces versus only one for his unfortunate opponent. He converted four of the nine break points he was offered but gave none to his adversary, who racked up the unforced errors. Collecting 54 points (versus 29), Medvedev brought Thiem’s six-match winning streak to a grinding halt.
