Road to the OBN: Medvedev and Nadal Will Be the Top Seeds in Montreal

August 2, 2022

Welcome to the Road to the National Bank Open. Every week, we will keep you updated on all the action on the ATP Tour as we build towards the National Bank Open in Montreal, which takes place from Aug. 8 to 14.

DAYS UNTIL THE NATIONAL BANK OPEN: 6

We are less than a week away from the start of main draw action at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers. Beginning Monday, the best ATP Tour players in the world will play for one of the most prestigious trophies in the sport at IGA Stadium in Montreal.

The draw ceremony will be conducted on Friday to determine the matchups for what promises to be an exciting week of tennis. The top 16 seeds will be based on this week’s rankings which means that World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and world no. 3 Rafael Nadal will occupy the top and bottom lines of the draw, respectively. Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas will round out the top 4 seeds in this year’s tournament. Meanwhile, Montreal’s own Félix Auger-Aliassime will be seeded no. 8.

The top eight seeds will receive an opening round bye and begin their title bid on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Before that happens, there is some business to take care of during this first week of the summer hard court swing in Los Cabos and Washington.

ON-COURT ACTION:

WASHINGTON

At the ATP 500 event in Washington, Andrey Rublev, Hubert Hurkacz, Taylor Fritz, and Reilly Opelka are the top seeds. Canadian Denis Shapovalov is seeded sixth and will face American J.J. Wolf in his opening match on Wednesday.

LOS CABOS

Before arriving in Montreal to defend his National Bank Open title, Medvedev is the top seed at the ATP 250 tournament in Mexico. Auger-Aliassime is seeded No. 2 and defending Los Cabos champion Cameron Norrie is seeded No. 3. All three players will receive an opening round bye.

STORIES TO WATCH:

MEDVEDEV SEEKING FIRST TITLE IN 2022

Playing for the first time since June, Medvedev hopes that his Los Cabos debut will lead to lifting his first trophy of the season this weekend. He has reached three finals in 2022 including one at the Australian Open in January and he’s won 12 of his 13 ATP singles titles on hard courts in his career.

OFF-COURT BUZZ:

The players were treated to quite a party to kick off the festivities in Los Cabos.

Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed some time on the water in Umag last week, roaming around on a sea-doo.
