The National Bank Open, formerly Rogers Cup

Tsonga’s come and gone

August 6, 2019

On Monday afternoon, former champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fell in the first round of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank at IGA Stadium.

He was ousted by Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in two quick sets (6-2, 6-2).

While it seems a harsh fate for the Frenchman, Stan Wawrinka’s game is full of promise. The former French Open, US Open and Australian Open champion is progressively regaining his position among the world elite. Today, he overpowered Grigor Dimitrov in two identical sets (6-4, 6-4) to reach the second round. Waiting in the wings is sixth seed Karen Khachanov of Russia.

Canadian Brayden Schnur lost in two sets (6-1, 6-2) to Tommy Paul of the US, who now faces Fabio Fognini of Italy.

Roberto Bautista Agut (10) of Spain, Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, Cameron Norrie of the UK (who will take on Alexander Zverev of Germany) and Cristian Garin of Chile all survived the opening round.

In doubles, Canadians Félix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil fought hard but were defeated by Jérémy Chardy and Fabrice Martin of France in two sets (7-6(7), 7-5).
