On Tuesday, 25-year-old Hubert Hurkacz (8) of Poland reconnected with his accuracy and the power of his serve at just the right time to close out the night session of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers with a win.

He defeated 23-year-old Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland, who plays with atomic precision and exceptional speed (6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2). The match featured some phenomenal tennis, with Ruusuvuori managing to hang on fiercely in the second set. In the third, Hurkacz asserted his dominance to advance to the third round on Thursday.

Diego Schwartzman rolls with the punches

Nothing gets Diego Schwartzman down. The 12th seed stayed true to his mantra and never gave up, even when things looked pretty bad. After losing the first set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-1, he clawed his way back to win the next two 6-3, 6-4 in just over two hours (2:22).

In the next round, he’ll tussle with another Spaniard, Albert Ramos-Vinola, who overpowered David Goffin of Belgium 7-6 (2), 6-2.
